Cats could take their time crossing.
A squirrel sits in the grass by the sidewalk
nibbling on a half eaten peach.
Little buggers, steal all of ’em every year before they can ripen.
Be raiding the bird feeder later.
So what, fill it again you muse
sipping at your cup of coffee.
Lawn looks great.
‘Cause the kids that used to tear it up are all grown and gone.
Just the squirrels and birds now
and this old bulldog asleep in the sun.
You watch the mailman making his way up the block.
Did they always work on Saturday?
All the work you’d done drifts through your mind.
Hours bent over cropping tobacco or fields of yellow Crooknecks.
Then, standing in front of classrooms filled with children
blends with the rest of a life’s ingredients.
It’s all good.
But you didn’t used to think so.
Takes awhile to work stuff out.
You shift your weight around in the wheelchair.
Some stuff just takes longer.
Can’t see the wheels of the loaded log trailer running over you anymore,
not unless you really try.
So quit trying to remember a moment that can’t be changed.
Plenty of other stuff took pieces of you for souvenirs anyhow.
Just pet that old dog
and sip your coffee.
Sun sure feels good this morning.
It’s all good.
